Well Dweller is a dark fairy-tale metroidvania from Kyle Thompson. You play Glimmer, a tiny bird who lives at the bottom of a well with his family, and you set out with nothing but a matchstick after the queen's hunter takes your siblings — the queen wants golden feathers for her royal gown, and birds are nearly extinct. This site collects what launch-week sources actually confirm: the store page, the four-update demo era, and reviews published under embargo.

Your first hour, in five steps

  1. Learn the two-button control scheme — A jumps, X attacks on an Xbox controller, and the slide gives invincibility frames (beginner guide).
  2. Read your own flame: the matchstick is your health bar, so a bright burn means full HP and a dying ember means one or two hits from death.
  3. Spend nothing yet — deaths never drop your currency, so bank it for trinkets at the next tent (trinkets).
  4. Open the map once and place a marker on the objective icon; the map supports zoom, custom markers and style switching (abilities & map).
  5. Find the nearest tent — tents are your save points and shops, and they are frequent enough that the game avoids stingy-checkpoint frustration (tips & FAQ).

Quick answers

QuestionShort answer
What is the flame on my matchstick? It is your health. It burns bright at full HP and shrinks as you take damage.
How does healing work?Oil vials restore health, and healing also temporarily raises your attack strength.
Do I lose currency when I die?No. Currency is kept on death — reviews confirm it explicitly.
How long is the game?Developer estimate: about 10–14 hours, with 15 biomes and 13 bosses.
Are there difficulty options?Yes — easy, normal and hard, plus accessibility toggles like "playable without timed input".
Where do I save?At tents. They also let you buy items.
Does my demo save carry over? Not confirmed either way at launch — watch the Steam announcements.
