Well Dweller boss guide
Well Dweller contains 13 bosses across its 15 biomes (developer estimate quoted in launch-week reviews). Boss fights are the game's stated highlight: reviewers describe them as demanding your full toolkit — slide i-frames, jumps, mid-air hover — while never crossing into unfairness.
The Groundskeeper
The first boss visible in official screenshots is The Groundskeeper, shown with the game's gold-framed, chain-hung boss health bar and skull motif. It is the fight that introduces the boss design rule: every boss "will consistently require every maneuver in your tool set".
| Tool | Use in boss fights |
|---|---|
| Slide | Your invincibility-frame dodge — the primary way through contact attacks and hazards |
| Jump + hover | The short mid-air hover corrects mistimed jumps during platforming attacks |
| Matchstick combos | Reliable melee with near-immediate responsiveness; combos are simple on purpose |
| Oil vials | Heal mid-fight — and the heal temporarily raises attack power for a burst window |

General boss rules (confirmed by reviews)
- Pattern learning beats stat checks. Bosses are "challenging enough that you need to learn their attack patterns" — attempts are short and readable.
- Deaths are cheap. Currency is not lost on death, so failed attempts never set your trinket budget back.
- Wins pay in movement. Defeating bosses "often leads to a meaningful new traversal ability", which is how the metroidvania gates its map (ability details).
- Checkpoint friction is deliberately low. Frequent tents (save points) sit near the action — reviews specifically praise Well Dweller for avoiding the stingy-checkpoint pitfall its genre is known for.
Difficulty levers for hard fights
- Switch to easy difficulty at any time — the game ships easy/normal/hard, and reviewers call the balance fair rather than punishing.
- Stack the auto oil vial trinket before a boss you keep failing (trinket effects).
- Enter with a full flame: the matchstick flame is your health bar, so boss attempts should start at bright burn.
What is verified yet
Verified: 13 bosses total, the Groundskeeper by name, the toolkit rule, death-keeps-currency, ability rewards, tent checkpointing.
Not yet verified (we will not guess): the full boss name list, attack-pattern breakdowns, health values, and the queen fight. Steam's community achievement pages and the first wave of full playthroughs are the sources we are waiting on; check back as the launch week fills in.
